The Butterfly — Hu Die, Transformation & the Freedom of the Soul
The butterfly (hu die) carries two of the most beautiful stories in Chinese culture. The first is the dream of Zhuangzi — the philosopher who dreamed he was a butterfly, and waking, could not be sure whether he was a man who had dreamed of being a butterfly, or a butterfly now dreaming of being a man. This is the story of consciousness itself, of the fluidity of identity, of the soul’s capacity to be more than one thing. The second is the story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai — the lovers who, denied each other in life, were transformed into butterflies after death and flew away together forever. The butterfly is thus both the symbol of the soul’s freedom and of love that transcends all limitation.
A luminous and meaningful gift for anyone in transformation, anyone in love, and anyone whose soul deserves to be reminded of its own beautiful freedom.
